Add Nature to the Classroom

4 Simple Steps to Create a Seed Sanctuary

There have been lots of questions about how to add nature to the classroom, especially during these winter months. Every year I tell myself, “I’m going to grow seeds this year.” For one reason or another, I never get around to it.  This year, I have been inspired by our Becoming A Natural Teacher e-course community and have created my own Seed Sanctuary. What is your Digging In Big Action Goal for February? Leave a comment below with your ideas.

My January Digging In Big Action Goal: Creating a Seed Sanctuary

Step One: Find Space Indoors and create an area to work.

Lesson: Embrace imperfections! I found this old table in my basement, liked the rustic look and kept it as is. 20160126_153046_resized_1 Step Two: Start collecting things that you may already have for planting seeds

Lesson: Recycle, Reuse and Repurpose. We often have more than we know we have.

Step Three: Add light. If you do not have enough natural light, consider purchasing a light system. (see the details for this system in the Book Store)

Lesson: Everything grows with light and love!

Step Four: Add Plants, grow seeds….stay tuned

Lesson: “All the Flowers of Tomorrow are the Seeds of Today.”

I love this video from Community Playthings of children singing A Little Seed. It is so simple yet it completely tells the story of planting a seed. I think my four year old children will enjoy singing it at our closing program in June. Our theme for the year has been being outdoors and nature. I hope you can share it.

I have decided to work with a simple seed growing project, using sip-locs with seeds and paper towels, hung in our windows. I will wait until March, so we will have enough light for them to sprout. This will give us an opportunity to learn about seeds first hand.

Let us know how it goes. I am so excited–I created an seed sanctuary and now have a new light system. Can’t wait to get started.
