3-6 Ten Tips to Stay Outdoors Longer

In this lesson, we will explore different tips and tricks for keeping your kids warn and eagerly asking to stay outside longer.

#1: Make Homemade Hot Cocoa

What winter memories are we creating for our children? Are we soaking up everything winter has to offer? Are kids staying outdoors long enough? One way to get them to stay out longer is to have a snack outdoors. Everyone knows winter +hot cocoa = happy kids.

Julie Smith from Kings Kids Daycare and Preschool noted, “Victoria, your comment that some children will look back on winter and the only memories of playing outdoors will be with us has resonated deeply with me. Hot cocoa with marshmallows was a treat we will repeat! ps the babies had warm water (shhh they thought they were all that) and of course I have one milk allergy requiring almond milk and one tree nut allergy…oy vey!). The story, Frozen Noses by Jan Carr, was perfect!

Here is a great HOMEMADE RECIPE for HOT COCOA!

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups almond milk (or your milk of choice)
  • 2 Tbsp cocoa powder
  • 2 Tbsp honey or maple syrup*
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions:

  1. Warm the almond milk in a small saucepan, then whisk in the cocoa powder, honey, and vanilla extract. Whisk well to remove any lumps from the cocoa.
  2. Optional: place in your blender (make sure the cocoa isn’t too hot – you don’t want to get burned) and blend until frothy.
  3. Serve warm.
