Sobel’s Children & Nature Design Principles

Outdoor Classrooms Training and Development Programs
“Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.” Ben Franklin
Outdoor Classrooms inspires early childhood teachers, out of school time educators; along with, parents and families to create one-of-a-kind Outdoor Classrooms and/or Backyard Teaching Gardens. All on a shoe-string budget. One way we do this is through workshops and training.
All workshops and training are led by Victoria Hackett, M.Ed. Whether your workshop is online or onsite, Victoria blends theory with hands-on problem-solving techniques, true-to-life anecdotes, valuable tips, and lively participation. Her extensive experience as a consultant/trainer/mentor and her background as a Natural Teacher allows her to bring profound knowledge and a pragmatic approach to every workshop she teaches.
WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:
SOBEL’S CHILDREN & NATURE DESIGN PRINCIPLES:
1-hour workshop
Pre-recorded
Who is David Sobel and what are his 7 Design Principles for Children and Nature?
Just as Howard Gardner had identified a set of intelligence for children, David Sobel, a place-based educator, identified a set of play themes that emerge when children experience free time in nature.
Today, I invite you to use Sobel’s principles either as a guide to help plan learning experiences with children of all ages or as an assessment tool for evaluating your outdoor classroom and/or backyard teaching garden designs. Sobel notes that the principles are not linked to any specific developmental age but will appear differently as the child grows older.
In this workshop you will:
- Learn Sobel’s 7 Design Principles for Children & Nature.
- Explore how to adapt them to your Outdoor Classroom and/or Backyard Teaching Garden.
- Discuss Place-Based Education for children.
COURSE FEATURES:
- Lifetime access
- Participation Certificate
- Input from a community of like-minded educators

When our school first set out to create an outdoor classroom space, I signed up and took your design class and it was extremely helpful. Now, over a year later, I am putting together a Teacher Training Day for my staff and I want to incorporate one of your on line workshops into our day. I really like the workshop, “Sobel’s Children and Nature Design Principles”. Not sure how to go about making it accessible for my staff. Do I just purchase the workshop and then show it to them on our training day? Any guidance would be helpful! Thank you!
Hi Maria. The 1-hour online workshops are meant for 1 educator ONLY, not to be shown for an entire staff training. I can offer a LIVE virtual training via Zoom using the Sobel workshop. This workshop would be tailored to your program. If you are interested in learning more, you can email me at victoria@outdoor-classrooms.com and I can give you the details.
