Today as school we did a little science with water. The children had to guess how many cups of water would turn 8 cups of dirt into mud. The class guesses ranged from 2 to 8. As the children took turns adding water they decided to stop after 3 measuring cups. As one child said, “It’s getting mucky, not yucky!” Many children explored the mud but many did not. The did not’s did not want to get their hands dirty. Solution? We added popsicle sticks.
Here are their comments as they played.
“I am never touching mud. It’s yucky!” (This child did engage later with the use of popsicle sticks.)
      “That’s gross looking”
‘Look, the water disappears.” (Love this child’s observation. When asked where did the water go?, the child said, “In the dirt Mrs. M. Don’t you know that?”
A child was sliding his hands through the mud and said, “Feels weird.”

This is a great indoor sensory/science play.

Think about all the experiences you are opening up for these children! I love this experiment and love the children’s reactions. Curiosity is peaked and the sensory experiences are boundless. Great job. I love the estimating challenge and how you have incorporated math and science into this sensory experience.
