Great idea – I love watercolor paper, too. Nice and sturdy. But I might use old file folders (laminated?) for front/back covers. Love the stick.

I love the look of a handmade journal. I love the feel of a brown paper cover over smooth, crisp white paper. I love the sound of painted pages turning. But in reality, it is just too much for us. Twice last year, I began the process of making nature journals and twice, they were not completed or used. By the time I pulled then out, the kids couldn’t even remember what they had painted. So now, I stock up on journals at Target ($3 for 8), and we are good to go!

I absolutely love the lead up to this and admire how you have come to terms with your relationship with journals. Bravo!

What a difference a year makes! I now have an early writer in the family and a budding artist–so our nature journals are always with us! I also took this project mobile last year as an activity to kick off our late winter/early spring season of my outdoor playgroup.

I am really enjoying how you are comparing all the growth happening in a year…both you, your program and your kids. So awesome!

I absolutely love this and am beyond excited to make my own prototype this evening with my girls at home! (which is kind of extra awesome, as our oldest is actually one of my students at school also!!) This is going to help me achieve one of my goals of journaling more! I do think I’m going to use all watercolor paper for ours so they’re nice and sturdy. I can see these as fantastic Mother’s Day gifts for Mama’s! What better than a journal made by your little lovie (I plan to let them select their own sticks, too!) that’s entirely filled with their own art inspired by their exploration outside at school. I can’t wait! Thank you so much!

So thrilled you love this idea. I had so much fun doing it too. What a great idea to use them as Mother’s day gifts!!! Can add a packet of seeds or something. How fun!

I love journals. Such a nice way to capture and record all sorts of things. I love this simple way the children can create their own journal.
It is easy to buy one, but how unique and personal for each to make their own. Even I will be making one! Thanks for the info!

I love working with the children as they create books and journals! We will be working on our bird journals tomorrow.

I LOVE this! We’ve been making a lot of homemade books here since my preschooler took an interest in illustrating and “writing” many, many books. The early authorship phase of preschoolers has always been one of my favorite, but it can also be a little rough on the budget and the tree population once they get into it, so we use a lot of upcycled artwork and recycled paper. I made my own nature journal this morning but plan to take some tabletop easels, watercolors, brushes and watercolor paper outside this afternoon with my sons so they can create their own covers and pick a stick. Victoria, I’m so curious what kind of watercolors you were holding up in the video? Sorry for the silly question!

Oh my goodness….early literacy with young children is a favorite time of mine too! I have piles of little journals from when my children were young. So much fun! A savory moment. Yes…not a silly question at all. I should have given the information in the video. The watercolors are wonderful! We bought them and they are AMAZING! My younger one is always eager to paint but my older one usually favors the opportunity to watch the brush water change colors with watercolor paints than to interrupt that experiment and put any color on his paper. He even fell in love with the way the colors blend and brighten as they’re layered onto watercolor paper.

It’s amazing where are can take a child…and even us adults. Beautiful work you doing with your children. They are very lucky!

Thank you so much for this great idea! I hope you don’t mind Victoria, but I am adding a link for instructions for a very similar journal (shared with permission from website) that uses a rubber band instead of twine. Although I hate the idea of substituting rubber for natural fiber most of our younger children don’t know how to tie. They should be able to do this exercise without too much help from an adult (if that’s the angle you’re looking for)! I hope this is helpful 🙂

Wonderful! Wonderful! I too have seen it done with a rubber band. Love that you added a link! Sharing information is what it’s all about! Let the seeds of inspiration go! 🙂

This is a nice way to have the children create it by themselves.(since they cannot tie yet) Thanks for the resource.
