I live half of the year in New York City and half in a national forest in Wisconsin’s Northwoods. I’m developing a private practice in both locations to strengthen connections with nature for children, adults, and families. I’ve always thought of every environment as a classroom. I have worked for decades 1:1 with young children with autism. My new project’s mission is to encourage, guide, and include families with children with ASD in experiences with nature. Before finding Victoria Hackett and Outdoor Classrooms, I don’t think I would have painted a tire in a bright color and placed it in my forest. However, what a great way of guiding children who struggle to focus and share attention?! So I’m now beginning a new facet in my threads of thought for enhancing the design of my two polar-opposite environments, both urban and rural, to be more encouraging. Some such enhancements in MINI ways, I now see as having significant potential.
What a wonderful reflection!! How interesting to be able to soak up two totally different environments and play with different nature based ideas to capture the minds of children with Autism. There are so many levels to this. Thanks for shairng.
Three things I took away from this video:
*Interesting discussion re: infants perception/benefit of looking upward when outdoors vs indoors
*Mural and Garden Signs for Literacy
*Shadow and Shapes play created with tarp
Thank you ~ I enjoyed so many of the activities seen and the discussion which took place!

Thanks for joining us.
Three things I took away from this video:
Make an outdoor space that explores the five senses.
Make a “shadow and shape space” with a tarp. Just cut out the shapes! Love that one.
Make a herb garden. Loved the idea of making a big pot of mint so the kids can put their entire head in. 🙂
And of course a music wall. We can make it work with the metal hooks. That’s way better than fishing wire plus it would be interchangeable.
Thank you

Awesome!
