MATH OUTDOORS

5 Easy Steps to Make Measuring Sticks

Do you have children in your program who look at sticks as weapons? Do you witness children hitting each other with sticks? Do you end up telling children, “sticks are off limits” because they don’t know how to play with them properly?

What if the sticks that we find in our backyard could be used for teaching Math Outdoors?

I am here today to share 5 easy steps to make Measuring Sticks out of the natural sticks. Math is everywhere!  Taking children outdoors and looking for Math during a walk is always fun. Children love to measure things and calculating how large or small things are. Today we are going to talk about using sticks as measuring sticks in an Outdoor Learning station.

Step One: Have children gather sticks

Step Two: Using a ruler mark off each inch of the stick

Step Three: Use a Sharpie to create permanent marks

Step Four: Put the measuring sticks in an Outdoor Learning Station with a sign inviting children to play and measure.

Step Five: Have fun! Document your findings.

Now we want to hear from you. Share your Measuring Stick stories in the comments below. What else can we make with sticks?
